The New Jersey bank of the Hudson River has had several names over the years – The Palisades, the Waterfront, and most recently, the Gold Coast. But however you refer to it, the common thread between all of the names is the awe and wonder we all hold for this thriving area. For anyone looking for a new home, this is the perfect place to invest.
Like most of the East Coast, New Jersey has a rich history – the Lenape Indians called this home, until European settlers began to arrive in the 1600’s. The area was pivotal during the Revolutionary War, and many battles between the British and American Armies. By the Nineteenth century, New Jersey was one of the states that prospered heavily from the Industrial Revolution, as various industries made their home here thanks to the ports and railroads.
As the automobile era took over, the construction of bridges and tunnels paved way to the end of the dominance of trains and boats. Many ports and stations were shut down, and New Jersey, for many years, experienced an economic downturn, one that would last until the economic boom during the 1990’s.
Today, the Gold Coast is the epitome of the economic renaissance New Jersey is experiencing. With it’s close proximity to the thriving New York City economy (not to mention some big businesses that have moved out of downtown Manhattan to come to New Jersey), the real estate market has never been more prosperous. The classic Federalist brownstones, single family homes, high-rises, and new luxury construction all share status as some of the most valuable real estate in New Jersey, as well as the entire New York Metropolitan area.

There are many options to get into Manhattan, wherever you are in the New Jersey Gold Coast.
Driving into Manhattan is very easy. Choose the Bayonne Bridge to Staten Island, the Holland Tunnel from Jersey City (to go to Lower Manhattan), The Lincoln Tunnel in Weehawken for Midtown access, or the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee for access to upper Manhattan. You do have to pay a toll to go over to Manhattan, but not on the way back.
Skip the traffic by taking one of the many public transportation options – New Jersey Transit provides many bus lines that go into Manhattan, and of course around New Jersey. The PATH train serves Wall Street and midtown Manhattan, and goes through Hoboken, Journal Square, and Newark Penn Station. Buses (maintained by NJ Transit and some private companies) provide service into the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown as well as the George Washington Bus Station in upper Manhattan. When taking a bus, just be aware that buses to New York have triple digit numbers, while buses within New Jersey are only two digits.
Even more amazing is the NY Waterway ferry service that goes from Jersey City, Hoboken, and Weehawken to Lower Manhattan and Midtown Manhattan – they even provide free shuttle buses to get you into the heart of the city, whether you are there to work on Wall Street or shop on Fifth Avenue.
For service within New Jersey, the Hoboken Train Terminal provides access to several lines: Main Line (to Suffern, and in partnership with MTA/Metro-North, express service to Port Jervis), Bergen County Line, and Pascack Valley Line, all via Secaucus Junction (where transfer is possible to Northeast Corridor Line); Montclair-Boonton Line and Morris and Essex Lines (both via Newark Broad Street Station); North Jersey Coast Line (limited service as Waterfront Connection via Newark Penn Station to Long Branch and Bay Head); Raritan Valley Line (limited service via Newark Penn Station).
There’s also the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, which serves Bayonne, Liberty State Park, Jersey City's West Side, downtown Jersey City, Hoboken Terminal, Hoboken's western perimeter, the Weehawken waterfront, Bergenline, and Tonnelle Avenues.
For access to air travel, the closest airport is Newark Airport, but LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy Airport are both just a quick drive away, in Queens. Private and corporate jet access is available at Teterboro Airport in Hackensack.
Gold Coast Schools
We know how much great communities must work hard to offer and maintain top-notch resources for individuals and families. A great education is always at the top of the list of concerns for those with children. We’re proud to say that New Jersey and especially the Gold Coast offers high quality schools at every level – make sure to peruse our school information for each county and municipality that we represent.
Each municipality in the two counties that make up the Gold Coast, offer some of the best public and private school options out there. And the private and communities colleges in the area are excellent options for full time and continuing education students. Within reach however, are also all the colleges and universities in the outlying areas, including Rutgers University, Princeton University, New York University, Columbia University, among many others. Whatever your pursuits or goals, you’re in the right area to find the institution that will get you closer to them.
Take advantage of all the opportunities that await you – by choosing the Gold Coast as your future home, you’ll certainly have the rest of your future in your hands.
The Future of the Gold Coast
Rapid development will continue as more and more families and individuals choose the New Jersey Gold Coast as their home. With such close proximity to the cultural and entertainment offerings of New York City, as well as the many employment opportunities, it has become the obvious choice for commuters and residents.
It’s no big secret that finding great New York City real estate is becoming more difficult, and the lack of space and rising prices has made it more attractive for people to look at the outer boroughs for newer construction and more affordable real estate. As more people relocate to the Gold Coast, it will only enliven the area, and stimulate the economic growth of the area, providing even more amenities for residents.
One of the ongoing projects expected to be completed in the years to come is the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway. This ambitious, 18.5 mile project - about 11 miles are completed - plans to connect the townships between Bayonne Bridge and George Washington Bridge with a gorgeous promenade. Although there has been some controversy surrounding the walkway, when it is completed, it will provide the residents of the Gold Coast with parks, recreation facilities, and a unique view of the New York City skyline that only New Jersey residents have within walking distance.
New York, New York
No doubt about it – New York City is an incredible draw for those considering relocating to New Jersey. The Gold Coast in particular offers an easy way into the city through various channels – bridges, tunnels, and even by water. Whether you’re most comfortable on a train, bus, ferry, or driving your own car, you can find yourself in Manhattan in just a few minutes.
Professionals who are working or looking for work will tell you that the commute to Manhattan is incredibly easy. While the job market is flourishing, especially in the Jersey City financial district, Lower Manhattan’s Wall St. and World Financial Center offer many employment opportunities at some of the world’s biggest financial institutions, and don’t forget about all of the media, publishing, and television juggernauts that have found their home in midtown.
If you need a break from all that New Jersey has to offer, or just want to change up your routine a bit, get yourself to a Broadway show, go shopping in SoHo, eat in Tribeca, visit a museum, or catch a sports game at Madison Square Garden. But if you’re a golfer, you know that New Jersey offers you the best option, with the Liberty National Golf Course nearby.
But from our experience, you’ll be happy to have the Gold Coast as your home, and Manhattan as a resource. And we’ll never stop mentioning the views, which are better than what most New Yorkers could ask for.
